Challenge

SRCE recognized the need to automate the creation of JATS XML and developed a service to assist academic open access journals, streamlining the process and enhancing their overall publishing efficiency and discoverability.

Open Access journals face technical, financial, and organizational challenges in producing machine-readable JATS XML, making it difficult to comply with standards like Plan S and to maximize the (re)use of articles.

Editors of smaller academic journals often lack the resources and knowledge to adopt contemporary publishing standards such as XML, resulting in missed potential for discoverability, accessibility, and reuse of their open access journals.

Workshop on converting DOCX documents to JATS XML format.

Solution

The JATS XML Converter Service automates the XML conversion process, reducing complexity and enabling journals to focus on content quality.

Why It Matters

With this service, an academic open access journal automates XML preparation, saving time and reducing the need for additional resources, while significantly upgrading the journal.

Creating XML for one article takes between 5 to 30 minutes.

The service aims to evolve to include API, plugins for platforms like OJS, and enhanced automation features, driving broader adoption and efficiency across all disciplines, including SSH.
